One Killed as Afghan Firing Hits Waziristan Bazaar

Rugged mountain terrain with watchtowers near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border

One civilian was killed and five people were injured after Afghan Taliban forces fired on civilian houses and a market in South Waziristan on the night of 27 October 2026, Pakistani officials have said. The firing targeted Angoor Adda Bazaar in Lower South Waziristan, near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, and damaged several shops.

The Deputy Commissioner of South Waziristan Lower said on X that the firing was unprovoked and that Pakistani forces were responding effectively and heavily. Reporting citing security sources says a mortar shell struck a home, injuring five members of the same family, and that the Pakistan Army swiftly retaliated, destroying several Afghan Taliban check posts across the border.

Condemnation and a high-alert border

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi condemned what he called unprovoked aggression against civilian homes and the bazaar, and praised the armed forces' response. Security sources cited in Pakistani reporting said troops remained on high alert and that the retaliatory operation was continuing.

A border already under strain

The Afghan Taliban spokesperson did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. The incident comes amid a year of worsening Pakistan-Afghanistan tensions, with Islamabad accusing Kabul of harbouring militants who stage cross-border attacks, a charge the Taliban government denies. Reuters notes the wider conflict between the two neighbours has killed hundreds of people this year.
