Atlassian Shares Plunge 16% Despite Earnings Beat

Atlassian shares suffered their worst day in four years on Friday, falling 16 per cent even though the software company beat Wall Street's earnings forecasts. The sell-off shows how quickly investors can punish a stock when growth slows, even by a fraction.
The shares closed at $153.68 on Friday 6 November, down $29.61, or 16.15 per cent, from Thursday's close of $183.29, according to Finnhub market data. Barron's reported that the drop was the stock's biggest one-day percentage fall since November 2022, citing Dow Jones Market Data.
The trigger was not the headline numbers. Atlassian reported adjusted earnings of $1.65 a share for its fiscal first quarter, ahead of the $1.44 forecast compiled by FactSet, and revenue rose 24 per cent year on year to $1.77 billion, above the $1.71 billion expected. Cloud revenue, the measure investors watch most closely, reached $1.3 billion, also ahead of forecasts.
What unsettled the market was the pace of that cloud growth. It slowed to 30.5 per cent year on year, from 30.8 per cent in the previous quarter, and Atlassian expects it to ease further to 27 per cent next quarter. The company did lift its full-year cloud growth forecast slightly, to 26 per cent from 25.5 per cent, but that was not enough to calm sellers.
Analysts moved quickly to cut their targets. Jefferies lowered its price target to $190 from $245, while Wells Fargo cut its objective to $200 from $270. BTIG analysts argued the fall was an overreaction, pointing to continued demand from large enterprise customers.
The result is a reminder that for highly valued software stocks, beating forecasts is not always enough. When growth decelerates, even modestly, the market can reprice a company sharply in a single session.
