Body found in search for missing Stonehouse farmer

A man's body has been found in the Canderside Toll area of Stonehouse during the search for missing 63-year-old Tom Allan, police have said. The report was received at around 1.15pm on Monday, 2 November 2026, bringing a large search operation to a sad turning point.
Formal identification has yet to take place, but Mr Allan's family have been informed of the discovery. Police said the death is not believed to be suspicious, and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course.
Ten days after he was last seen
Mr Allan was last seen in the Westmains Farm area of Stonehouse at around 8.15am on Friday, 23 October, and was reported missing later that evening. He was described as white, about 6ft 1in tall, with grey hair, and was last seen wearing blue overalls and a white cap, possibly with a green jacket.
The search that followed covered farmland and the wider local area. Specialist resources took part, including a police helicopter, a dive and marine unit, police dogs and mountain rescue teams, supported by partner agencies.
What police had asked the public to do
During the search, officers had asked people living, walking or driving in the area to look out for Mr Allan and to check gardens, sheds and outbuildings in case he had sought shelter. Inspector Kenny MacRobert said officers had been very concerned for his welfare as the days passed.
Police have not yet confirmed the identity of the man found, and further details are expected once formal identification and the report to the Procurator Fiscal have been completed.
