Ways and Means romps home in Breeders' Cup sprint

Ways and Means romped to victory in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Keeneland on Saturday, winning the $1 million race by 6 1/4 lengths in what was expected to be the final race of her career.
The five-year-old, sent off as the even-money favourite, had to be backed out of the starting gate before the race but then stalked the early pace, slipped up the rail approaching the stretch and pulled clear under jockey Flavien Prat. She covered the seven furlongs in 1:21.76 and paid $4.14 on a $2 win wager. Foie Gras finished second and Explora third.
Bacio lands the Turf Sprint
Earlier on Saturday's card, Bacio won the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, also worth $1 million. The colt, who had never won a stakes race in the United States before Saturday, went off as favourite and rolled past the field to record his fifth straight win. In seven career starts he has never finished lower than second.
Bacio also became the first winner of the Nunthorpe Stakes at York to add the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint to his record, according to the Courier-Journal's trackside coverage.
Sovereignty lands the Classic
The wins came on the second and final day of the 2026 Breeders' Cup, the 43rd edition of the meeting, which features 14 Grade 1 races at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky, with more than $34 million in purses.
Saturday's card closed with the $7 million Longines Breeders' Cup Classic, and Sovereignty won it by 1 3/4 lengths. Ridden by Junior Alvarado and trained by Bill Mott, the 2025 Kentucky Derby winner covered the 1 1/4 miles on a fast dirt track in 2:00.36. The Puma finished second and the Mott-trained Knightsbridge third, while defending champion Forever Young finished fifth and Golden Tempo sixth, according to the Courier-Journal's trackside coverage, confirmed by USA Today's results listing.
