The Milwaukee Brewers overcame a four-run deficit to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 in Game 2 of the World Series on Saturday night, taking a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Rookie Cooper Pratt singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning to complete a comeback that had the American Family Field crowd on its feet, after Milwaukee trailed 4-0 in the first inning.

From 4-0 down to 5-4 up

Tampa Bay burst ahead against rookie Logan Henderson, who allowed four runs in three innings, but Milwaukee answered with two runs in the bottom of the first against Rays ace Drew Rasmussen. David Hamilton cut the gap to 4-3 in the fourth, and Sal Frelick tied the game in the sixth with a leadoff home run, his first career postseason homer, driven 408 feet to centre field. Brice Turang doubled to open the seventh, and Pratt, who had made a costly error in the first inning, greeted Kevin Kelly with the RBI single that put Milwaukee 5-4 ahead. The Brewers bullpen delivered six scoreless innings.

One controversial final out

The Rays stranded the tying run at third in the ninth for the second consecutive game. Jonny DeLuca doubled to open the ninth, advanced to third on a groundout, and Yandy Diaz struck out on a controversial check-swing call that ended the game, with home plate umpire Jim Wolf initially unconvinced before first base umpire James Hoye ruled Diaz had gone around. Game 3 moves to St. Petersburg on Monday, and history favours Milwaukee: only ten teams have overcome a 2-0 deficit to win the World Series, the last being the New York Yankees in 1996. The Brewers are playing in their first World Series since 1982.
