14 arrested as protesters block Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge in New York City

Fourteen people were taken into custody on Wednesday 28 October after anti-ICE protesters blocked traffic on the Manhattan side of New York's Brooklyn Bridge. About 30 demonstrators took part in the blockade, police sources said, and the New York Police Department later confirmed 14 arrests, with no reported injuries. All lanes were open again shortly before 1:30pm local time, after roughly an hour of disruption for drivers heading into Manhattan.

Protest linked to Marble Hill shooting

Demonstrators said the action was a response to the shooting of a man by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in the Marble Hill area of the Bronx earlier in October. Protesters carried signs reading "Stop Shooting Us" and "Stop Shooting Our Neighbors" and demanded that federal immigration agents leave New York City. The Marble Hill encounter, in which a man was shot during an attempted arrest, has stirred anger across the city for nearly three weeks, and federal officials have defended the officer involved.

Charges not yet detailed

Details of the individual charges facing those taken into custody were not immediately available, and police did not immediately say how long each person would be held. The blockade, which began at about 12:30pm, backed up traffic for miles on the Manhattan approaches before officers moved in and cleared the roadway. For commuters the disruption was brief, but for the protesters it was the point: one of the city's most recognisable crossings, brought to a standstill in the middle of a weekday afternoon.
