Channel crossings resume after 21-day pause, 263 arrive

The pause and what came before it
Small boat crossings of the English Channel resumed on Thursday 29 October 2026 after a 21-day pause, according to Home Office figures reported on 30 October. A total of 263 people arrived on Thursday, taking the number of arrivals recorded in 2026 to 21,198. The pause, attributed to high sea swell and wind in the Channel, was the longest gap in arrivals so far this year.
No arrivals were recorded between 8 and 28 October. The last arrivals before the pause were 119 people in two boats on 7 October. Earlier in October, the first week of the month had seen 1,739 arrivals, but conditions then deteriorated and crossings stopped for three weeks. By the morning of Thursday 29 October, GB News reported that about 150 people had crossed or were crossing; the full-day Home Office total of 263 reported later reflects arrivals across the whole day, not only the morning.
Year-to-date comparison
The 2026 total of 21,198 stands 43% below the 36,954 recorded at the same point in 2025, and 29% below the figure at the same stage in 2024. The Home Office said crossings were down significantly and that it had recorded the lowest number of summer arrivals since 2020. It also said joint work with international partners had prevented more than 50,000 crossing attempts and led to the seizure of 1,100 boats and engines since the election. Border Security Commander Duncan Capps told MPs almost 3,800 people were waiting in the two main camps in northern France.
What happens next
The Home Office normally publishes each day's official count the following day, so Friday's crossings, if any, will be confirmed in the next update. Weekly numbers vary a lot with the weather, so a single day's resumption does not by itself show a change in the longer trend.
