Charlene Ruto marries Tanzanian entrepreneur Isaya Yunge in Mwanza ceremony

Charlene Ruto, the daughter of Kenyan President William Ruto, married Tanzanian entrepreneur Isaya Yunge in a lakeside ceremony in Mwanza, Tanzania, on Friday. The wedding at the Malaika Beach Hotel drew senior figures from both countries to the shores of Lake Victoria, in one of East Africa's most closely watched social events of the year. Charlene was escorted down the aisle by both her parents, President Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto.
Guests from two countries
Among those in attendance were National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale. Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi was also among the Kenyan guests who travelled for the occasion. Security in Mwanza was reinforced ahead of the ceremony, with regional police commander Wilbrod Mutafungwa confirming additional measures around hotels, major roads and the venue.
A journey that began in August
The wedding followed the couple's traditional Kalenjin engagement ceremony, known as Koito, held on 8 August at Intonna Heritage Farm in Kilgoris, Narok County. In the days before the Mwanza ceremony, Charlene hosted a bridal shower in Nairobi on 3 November, attended by close friends, relatives and her sisters. The following evening, First Lady Rachel Ruto hosted a separate gathering known as the Mother's Blessing, where older women offered prayers, marriage counsel and guidance.
A union with wider resonance
Charlene has built a public profile in her own right through youth empowerment initiatives and civic engagements. Her marriage to Yunge, a Tanzanian entrepreneur whose business interests span the region, has been widely described as a cross-border union that underlines the close ties between Kenya and Tanzania. Congratulatory messages from public figures and members of the public continued to arrive throughout the day as the celebrations in Mwanza came to a close.
