Tottenham Hotspur beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, recording only their second Premier League win at the ground in 35 attempts and their first since 2018. Spurs deserved the three points in a rain-soaked match, scoring through an own goal and a fine individual effort from Mathys Tel, while Chelsea finished with ten men after Cole Palmer was shown a second yellow card. The result lifts Tottenham's spirits after a poor start to the season and deepens Chelsea's troubles.

How Spurs won it

Tottenham dominated the ball in the first half, enjoying around three-quarters of possession in the opening half-hour and creating several chances, though they could not convert early dominance into goals. Chelsea regrouped towards the end of the first half, with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky making three saves in two minutes. The breakthrough came after the break, when debutant goalkeeper Mike Penders punched into his own net, and Tel added a superb second. Palmer was then sent off for a second bookable offence after stamping on Conor Gallagher following a reckless tackle.

Maddison injury worry

The win came at a cost for Spurs, as James Maddison, recently returned from an 18-month injury layoff, went down holding his thigh less than five minutes into the second half and was replaced by Gallagher. Maddison looked distraught as he left the pitch, and his fitness will be a concern for manager Roberto De Zerbi ahead of the coming fixtures. Mateus Fernandes, named man of the match, said afterwards that Spurs want to change the club's mentality and beat the top teams. Chelsea, meanwhile, must regroup quickly, with their home record against their London rivals now a running sore.
