Daimler Truck Profit Jumps 73% on North America Rebound

Daimler Truck reported a 73% jump in third-quarter operating profit on 6 November, as a rebound in North America drove the truckmaker's best quarter of the year, but weaker orders took the shine off the result. Adjusted group earnings before interest and tax rose to €1.124 billion from €648 million a year earlier, while group revenue climbed 19.2% to €12.58 billion. Earnings per share rose to €0.91 from €0.51.
North America drives the rebound
Trucks North America supplied most of the improvement. The unit's revenue rose to €5.70 billion from €4 billion, adjusted operating profit climbed to €691 million from €257 million, and its margin reached 12.1%, up from 6.4%. Deliveries in the region jumped 51% to 45,629 vehicles. Group-wide, unit sales rose 26% to 91,260 vehicles and industrial revenue increased to €11.64 billion from €9.69 billion, with the industrial margin improving to 9.1% from 6.2%. Mercedes-Benz Trucks earned €337 million, up from €319 million, while Daimler Buses profit slipped to €123 million from €137 million.
Orders lag and outlook held
The concern for investors was the order book. Incoming orders rose 10% to 71,168 vehicles but trailed deliveries of 91,260 for a second straight quarter, and group orders missed consensus expectations by about 9%, with North America 16% short. Over nine months, orders fell 30% to 199,151 units and adjusted group profit declined to €2.46 billion from €2.74 billion. Management still confirmed its full-year guidance, including group adjusted operating profit of €3.6 billion to €4.1 billion, an industrial margin of 7% to 9% and free cash flow of €3 billion to €3.5 billion.
