Dow Jones Falls 1.23 Percent as Wall Street Ends Week Lower on 23 October 2026

Dow leads Friday losses on Wall Street
Wall Street closed Friday, 23 October 2026, in negative territory, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average shedding 1.23 percent to close at 52,215.16 points, according to the 360 Mozambique report dated 24 October 2026. The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.21 percent to 25,955.34 points, while the S and P 500 retreated 0.52 percent to 7,623.63 points. The Dow therefore recorded the steepest percentage fall among the three US indexes on the day, a drop of more than 650 points in index terms.
The session extended losses from Thursday, when weakness in technology shares, including Meta after its latest earnings results, had already weighed on sentiment. American Express also fell more than 3 percent after reporting mixed results and announcing a 5 percent reduction in its global workforce. Together, those company stories added to broader worries about spending on artificial intelligence and about whether recent earnings can justify current valuations.
Weekly picture is more mixed
Despite the weak Friday, the week as a whole was not uniformly negative. The S and P 500 declined 0.47 percent over the week and the Nasdaq fell 0.71 percent, but the Dow finished the week with a gain of 0.41 percent. That split is a reminder that a single session, however sharp, does not by itself define a weekly trend, and that different indexes carry different sector weights.
Oil was a major backdrop to the sell-off, with Brent reaching $117 a barrel in the report and West Texas Intermediate passing $103, driven by escalation in the Middle East. Higher energy prices raise costs for businesses and households and can complicate the inflation outlook for central banks. European markets also fell on Friday, with the FTSE 100 down 0.32 percent to 10,690.36. This article is market news, not investment advice.
