Fleetwood dump Arsenal out of Carabao Cup on penalties

Highbury Stadium, Fleetwood, home of Fleetwood Town

League Two side Fleetwood Town knocked Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday 27 October, winning 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Highbury Stadium and reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in the club's history. Aaron Loupalo-Bi put the hosts ahead in the 21st minute, beating goalkeeper Illan Meslier, before Viktor Gyökeres equalised five minutes after half-time. Fleetwood then held on against a side 84 places above them in the English pyramid, having won only once in their previous eight league matches.

A 21st-minute lead, held for 90 minutes

The tie began in farce. Play was stopped less than two minutes after kick-off when an unauthorised drone appeared above the ground; BBC Sport, as cited in reporting, puts the stoppage at 1 minute 40 seconds elapsed with play resuming at about 10 minutes, an interruption of around eight minutes. One report says both teams were forced off and another says players were called towards the touchline while officials considered taking them off, so this report does not state definitively that players left the pitch. A claim that the drone operator was located rests on a commentator's second-hand account and is reported, not confirmed, here.

A drone, a red card, and five perfect penalties

The ending belonged to Fleetwood's goalkeeper. Arsenal's 16-year-old Max Dowman was sent off in the 85th minute for an incident involving Harrison Neal, and in the shoot-out Fleetwood scored all five penalties while Jay Lynch saved Bruno Guimarães' effort, with Conor Haughey converting the decisive kick. The last time Arsenal lost to a fourth-tier team was in 2012, against Bradford City on penalties in the same competition's quarter-finals.
