Two Government Researcher Jobs in London Close 1 Nov

The Institute for Government is hiring two researchers in London, one for its UK government team and one for its public services team. The roles are permanent, subject to a three-month probationary period, and pay £34,000–£37,000 a year depending on experience. Applications close at 22:00 on Sunday 1 November 2026 — re-checked on 31 October, when the Institute's vacancies page still listed both roles.
What the researchers will do
Researchers will lead smaller projects or parts of larger projects, carrying out qualitative and quantitative research, literature reviews, interviews with politicians, officials and academics, and data analysis. They will also write reports and explainers, engage with the media, and help organise panel events, roundtables and workshops. The UK government team focuses on Whitehall, Westminster and the civil service, while the public services team examines how services perform across the country.
Who the Institute is looking for
Applicants need enthusiasm for the Institute's mission, relevant professional experience, and knowledge of UK politics, public policy and how government works. Excellent written and verbal communication, attention to detail, and a collaborative approach are essential. Experience with ministers, Parliament, the civil service, local government or frontline services is desirable but not required. The Institute says it will not provide visa sponsorship for new staff.
How to apply
Applications are made through an anonymised online process, starting with a timed multiple-choice test, followed by three written questions of up to 250 words each and a CV of no more than two pages. First-round interviews are planned for the weeks commencing 16 and 23 November, in person in London. The usual working week is 37.5 hours, with at least three days a week in the London office.
