Execution carried out on Saturday
Iran has executed a man convicted over an armed attack on a police station in the south-east of the country that killed and wounded several officers. Mohammad Aref Shahbakhsh was executed on Saturday morning after the completion of legal proceedings, Iran's judiciary announced. He had been identified by Iranian media as a member of the Sunni militant group Jaish al-Adl.
Conviction over the Khash attack
Shahbakhsh was convicted of baghi, or armed rebellion, and moharebeh, often translated as "waging war against God", over his role in the attack on the Qaleh Bid police station in Khash, in Sistan-Baluchestan province. Iran's judiciary said the attack took place on 16 August 2024. No casualty figures were published, and the official reports did not give details of the evidence presented in court or the circumstances of his arrest.
Jaish al-Adl operates on the border
Jaish al-Adl operates in south-eastern Iran near the border with Pakistan and has carried out numerous attacks against Iranian security forces, according to Iranian media. The group is also known as Jaish al-Zolm. Sistan-Baluchestan, Iran's largest province, has seen repeated clashes between security forces and armed groups along the border.
Judiciary says legal process complete
The execution was reported by Mizan Online, the judiciary's news outlet, and by Iranian state media. The judiciary said Shahbakhsh was arrested as one of the main suspects during intelligence and law-enforcement operations, and that his affiliation with the group and his role in the attack were then investigated. The death sentence was carried out once all legal procedures and formalities had been completed.
