Tehran says its forces are stronger
Iran has warned that any new American attack will draw an immediate response with no geographical limits, as tensions over the Strait of Hormuz continue. Army spokesperson Brigadier General Mohammad Akraminia said on Saturday that Iran's armed forces were stronger and more prepared than at the start of the war with the United States, which began in February. He said the military had gained experience from direct confrontation with the United States and Israel and was on higher alert.
Warning issued on the supreme leader's orders
"Under the order of the Supreme Leader, the response of the armed forces will be immediate, effective, and without geographical limitations," Akraminia said, according to state news agency IRNA. He said American military bases and interests beyond West Asia and the Persian Gulf were within range of Iranian missiles and drones and could be targeted if Washington attacked again.
Strait of Hormuz stays shut
Akraminia also said Iran retained control of the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway through which about one-fifth of global oil consumption normally passes, and that it would not reopen until Washington met Tehran's seven conditions. The conditions have not been publicly detailed. Iran has repeatedly rejected President Donald Trump's claim that American forces control the strait.
Warnings follow Trump's fresh threats
The warning came a day after Trump suggested the United States "could be an occupier" in Iran and said Washington was prepared to resume military operations if required. The United States also announced on Friday a reward of up to $20 million for information about Iran's nuclear programme. Qatar is continuing mediation efforts between the two sides, and Iran's president has said Tehran is still seeking a diplomatic resolution through dialogue.
