Israel Demolishes, Shells South Lebanon Despite Framework

The Israeli army carried out a demolition operation and artillery shelling in southern Lebanon on Saturday, despite a US-brokered framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel reached in June, Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported.

The army "carried out a demolition operation in Bani Hayyan," NNA said, without providing details. It also conducted search operations in Khiam, in the Marjayoun district, and its artillery shelled the outskirts of Wadi al-Hujair in the Jabal Amel region, Anadolu reported.

The June 26 framework provides for a gradual Israeli withdrawal in exchange for the Lebanese army deploying and assuming security responsibilities. Israel still occupies parts of southern Lebanon, including ground seized in the 2023-2024 war, when its forces advanced about 10 kilometres.

Lebanon's Health Ministry said on Thursday that Israeli attacks since March 2 had killed 4,390 people and wounded 12,429 as of 5 November. The toll underlines how the violence has continued even under the framework that was meant to restrain it.

The Israeli army is also preparing for a possible resumption of fighting in Lebanon if hostilities with Iran reignite, Yedioth Ahronoth reported on Friday. Israel's security establishment is awaiting a US decision on whether to resume operations against Iran, the newspaper said, adding that the military had not detected unusual US preparations apart from reinforcements in southern Israel and naval movements in the Arabian Sea.

Beirut has repeatedly demanded a full Israeli withdrawal. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun denounced the "continuing Israeli violations" in southern Lebanon on Thursday, saying they were occurring "despite the ceasefire, as do demolitions of homes and places of worship, while the number of killed and wounded rises day after day".

Saturday's action came a day after Israeli strikes hit Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon and Quneitra in southern Syria.
