Japan's Nanami Kurita celebrates scoring with teammates during the U-17 Women's World Cup quarter-final against Ghana in Rabat

Japan face Nigeria in the final of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Rabat on Saturday, with history on the line for both teams.

The match kicks off at 6.30pm GMT at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, Pitch 3. Nigeria's Flamingos are the first African team ever to reach the final, while Japan are playing in their fourth final and chasing a second title after lifting the trophy in 2014.

Nigeria reached the final by beating Brazil 3-1 in Wednesday's semi-final. The Flamingos lost their opener 2-1 to Poland but have since won five in a row, including a 3-1 group-stage win over defending champions North Korea. Victory would make them the first African nation to win the tournament — and the first African country to hold under-17 titles in both the men's and women's competitions, after five men's titles won by the Golden Eaglets.

Japan's dramatic road to the final

Japan came from behind to draw 1-1 with two-time defending champions North Korea before winning the penalty shootout 4-1. North Korea led through Ri Ui-gyong in the 52nd minute, but a late own goal by Won Sol-gyong in stoppage time forced the shootout.

Japan had earlier ended four straight quarter-final exits by beating Ghana 1-0, Nanami Kurita scoring the only goal in the 54th minute.

A tournament of records

Japan have scored 150 goals in the competition since the first edition in 2008, the highest tally of any team, and have appeared in every edition. They won the title in 2014 with a 2-0 victory over Spain but finished runners-up in 2010 and 2016.

American referee Natalie Simon will take charge of the final, leading a mainly United States-based team with two Canadian officials. The match will be shown live on FIFA+ and DAZN.
