Kyiv plans Dnipro water crossings as bridge strikes escalate

Kyiv plans to allocate 1 billion hryvnias ($22 million) to build water crossings over the River Dnipro, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Tuesday 27 October 2026, as Russia escalates its attacks on the city's bridges.
Kyiv has six main bridges across the wide river that divides the capital, and disruptions to bridge traffic could become critical for residents who live and work on opposite banks. Russia has significantly stepped up strikes on logistics in and around Kyiv in recent months, and in October it struck bridges, disrupting transport for hundreds of thousands of people.
South Bridge hit overnight
An overnight Russian missile strike hit the South Bridge, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said, calling it a serious escalation. Earlier, Russia targeted other bridges in the city with drones. The strike killed one person and injured at least 10, according to the early official account, with most of the injured reported to be students from a university dormitory; later updates put the injured figure higher, at 14.
Traffic on the South Bridge was halted in both directions while experts assessed the damage, and metro service on lines crossing the bridge was restricted. Klitschko said the city's defence council had discussed the project to build combined water crossings and their access roads, but gave no further details. Water crossings can take forms including pontoons, fords and other low-lying structures.
