Jake Bates kicked a 22-yard field goal as time expired to give the Detroit Lions a 20-17 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, snapping the Packers’ three-game winning streak. The Week 7 NFC North game at Ford Field ended in fittingly chaotic fashion, with both teams combining for 739 yards but only 37 points.

How the finish unfolded

The Lions drove 71 yards on the final possession, helped by an 18-yard catch from Sam LaPorta, a 15-yard run by Jahmyr Gibbs and a key first-down pickup by Gibbs in the final minute. Gibbs slid short of the end zone to force Green Bay to burn its final timeout, setting up Bates’ winner. Detroit had earlier gambled and lost on fourth-and-1 at its own 24 with 4:53 left in a tie game, but survived when rookie Packers kicker Trey Smack had a 35-yard attempt blocked with 3.21 left.

The numbers that decided it

Jared Goff passed for 303 yards and two touchdowns, both to Jameson Williams, while Amon-Ra St. Brown caught nine passes for 153 yards and Gibbs rushed for 116 yards on 29 carries. Jordan Love passed for 274 yards and two touchdowns for Green Bay, whose Josh Jacobs marked his season debut with a touchdown catch. The Packers were 1-for-4 in the red zone, missed two field goals, and finished with eight penalties, including a late offside that kept Detroit’s winning drive alive.

What it means

Detroit improves to 4-2 and Green Bay falls to 4-3, with the Packers’ hopes of winning the NFC North fading after a second divisional loss. For the Lions, it was a win they twice seemed determined to give away — and then, at the last, refused to lose.
