Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake Strikes Near Hamakita, Japan

By The Daily Byte ·07 Nov 2026 ·2 min read
Earthquake damage in Japan

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck near Hamakita in Japan's Shizuoka Prefecture on Saturday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The tremor was recorded at 16:04 UTC — 01:04 local time on Sunday — about 10 kilometres north-west of Hamakita, at a depth of 38.1 kilometres. The epicentre, at 34.86 degrees north and 137.69 degrees east, lay inland in central Honshu, close to the city of Hamamatsu. Because the quake struck inland, there was no tsunami threat.

No tsunami threat, green alert issued

The USGS issued a green alert for the event, indicating a low likelihood of casualties or damage. The maximum estimated intensity reached V on the shaking scale, and the agency had received felt reports from people in the surrounding area by the time of its update at 16:42 UTC. Hamakita sits in a densely populated part of Shizuoka Prefecture, with Hamamatsu — home to around 790,000 people — about 22 kilometres to the south. No damage or injuries had been reported in the first accounts of the tremor.

Second strong tremor on the same day

The Hamakita quake was the second magnitude 5.5 tremor to hit Japan on Saturday. An earlier quake struck at 11:07 UTC about 74 kilometres north-east of Hasaki in Chiba Prefecture, at a depth of 31.7 kilometres. Japan sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and experiences frequent seismic activity, with its building codes and early-warning systems designed to limit the impact of moderate tremors such as these. Authorities had not reported any disruption to transport or power supplies in connection with either quake.
