A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off Japan's eastern coast on Friday evening, shaking areas around Tokyo but prompting no tsunami warning, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Tremor felt across the Kanto region

The earthquake hit at 7:39pm local time on 6 November, with its epicentre in the sea off the eastern Kanto region, roughly 90 miles south-east of Hasaki and about 150 miles east-south-east of Tokyo. The JMA put the depth at about 10 kilometres, while the USGS recorded a depth of 18 miles. Such differences between agencies are common in the first hours after a tremor.

The JMA recorded a maximum seismic intensity of 3 on Japan's seven-point scale, which measures shaking at individual locations rather than the size of the earthquake. In Urayasu, the city in Chiba Prefecture that is home to Tokyo Disney Resort, observation stations recorded intensity 2. The tremor arrived about 81 minutes before the resort's two theme parks were due to close for the evening, and no park closure or evacuation was confirmed.

No tsunami threat and no reported damage

The JMA said there was no concern about tsunami damage from the earthquake, although slight sea-level changes were possible along parts of the coast. The USGS issued a green alert, indicating a low likelihood of casualties or damage, and reported light shaking in the affected area.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, according to reporting by AFP published by The Japan Times. The epicentre was about 375 kilometres south of the site of the magnitude 9.1 earthquake that struck Japan in 2011 and triggered a devastating tsunami. Japan sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is one of the world's most seismically active countries.
