Manchester United and Bournemouth fans face tram nightmare getting to Old Trafford

Manchester United fans have been warned to allow extra time for their journey to Old Trafford today, with major tram closures across Manchester disrupting the usual routes to the stadium for the match against Bournemouth. No tram services will run on the Altrincham, Eccles or Trafford Park lines, while East Didsbury and Airport line services will only run as far as Firswood, with no trams continuing into Manchester city centre.

Which stops are affected

Several tram stops close to Old Trafford are affected. Trafford Bar, a nearby stop on the Altrincham line, will be closed, while the Old Trafford tram stop itself, just outside the cricket ground and a short walk from the football stadium, will also be affected. Fans who usually travel on the Eccles line will be unable to use Exchange Quay, around a 10-minute walk from the ground, and the closure of the Trafford Park line means Wharfside, the closest tram stop to the stadium, will not be accessible. Firswood will be the nearest available tram stop for supporters heading to the match, but it is around a 25-minute walk from the ground.

How to get there instead

Replacement buses will be available on match day, alongside additional Bee Network bus services to help supporters reach the ground, and all Bee Network tickets will be accepted on the replacement services. Fans are advised to leave an hour earlier than usual to account for potential traffic delays. The disruption comes as major improvement works take place across the Bee Network, with the closures scheduled to continue until 1 November. Away supporters travelling from Bournemouth face the same disruption, so both sets of fans should plan their journeys before setting off.
