Meloni warns Europe's civilian infrastructure is under attack after cyberattacks and flight bomb threats

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has warned that civilian infrastructure across Europe is under attack, after a run of cyberattacks on supermarkets and blood services and a wave of hoax bomb threats against flights.
Speaking to reporters on Friday at an event in Verona, Meloni said it was not yet clear whether the incidents were connected, but that they pointed to the same concern. "Right now, we're not able to say whether the attack on plasma in France, the fake bomb threats on planes, or the assaults targeting food products are all connected. But they definitely all tell us the same thing: today, what is under attack are civilian infrastructures," she said.
Supermarket refrigeration targeted
Hackers gained remote control of supermarket refrigeration systems and raised temperatures, in some cases to 50 degrees Celsius, damaging food supplies. Similar incidents were reported on 2 November in Belgium, Sweden and Ireland, and around 20 grocery stores were targeted in Italy. Reports put the number of affected European Union countries at roughly 10.
Refrigeration equipment at French blood service facilities was also affected, raising concern about how everyday services can be disrupted through their technology.
Flights hit by hoax threats
A further 18 flights were affected by fake bomb threats on Friday 6 November, after earlier alerts in the same week forced at least 35 flights to be diverted or searched, according to The Guardian. An email signed by a group calling itself the "Male State" reportedly targeted around 12 flights, including routes linked to Rome and Milan.
Meloni also argued that defence spending is not only about weapons, but about protecting the systems that keep daily life running. No group has claimed responsibility for the cyberattacks, and investigators have not confirmed who is behind them or whether the incidents are linked.
