TikToker Ansar Mehmood, known online as Mr Patlu, has been arrested in Islamabad over the stampede at his wedding celebrations in Sialkot that killed two people and injured around 18.

Mehmood was arrested in the Gulberg area of Islamabad, Bloom Pakistan reported on 3 November. He had been on the run since the crush at his mehndi ceremony.

The stampede happened on the night of 31 October at Faraz Cricket Ground on Daska Road, where a large crowd had gathered after the event was promoted on social media with a prize draw offering a car, 50 motorcycles, cash and other gifts. When the gates were opened to the crowd, people surged forward and many were knocked down.

Muhammad Aqeel, 30, died while being taken to hospital. A second victim, 22-year-old Rehan, died in Lahore on 1 November after being transferred there for treatment. Early reports put the number of injured at between 14 and 18.

Police registered a case at Motra Police Station naming nine people, including Mehmood, his brother Kashif and the venue owner, along with 40 to 45 unidentified security guards. Six people connected with running the event had already been arrested. The charges include causing death through negligence, violating official orders, vandalism, incitement and unlawful assembly.

Sialkot Deputy Commissioner Awais Mushtaq said permission had been granted for a private mehfil-e-sama and qawwali programme inside an enclosed venue, to begin after Isha prayers, and the no-objection certificate was cancelled after the conditions were breached.

Mehmood has denied responsibility, saying he was not at the venue when the stampede happened and that he would surrender. The incident has also been raised in the Punjab Assembly, where opposition member Nadeem Qureshi has sought answers from the government about security lapses at the event.

The allegations against those named in the case are part of an ongoing police investigation and have not been decided by a court.
