Musk Warning Hits Neocloud Shares as AI Debt Fears Grow

Shares in neocloud companies fell in premarket trading on Monday 26 October 2026, after Elon Musk warned that the sector faced consolidation and failures, adding to growing concern about debt-fuelled spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure. CoreWeave led the declines with a 4.5% drop, while Nebius Group fell 3.4% and IREN dropped 3.3%, according to Reuters. Applied Digital and TeraWulf shed more than 2% each, and Core Scientific lost 1.7%.
A warning that landed on already nervous markets
Musk said in a post on X on Sunday that more than 200 neoclouds would face what he called guppy-level death and consolidation, and that SpaceX would not buy any neocloud companies. He also said markets had almost entirely shut off access to money for companies without substantial revenue independent of AI data centres.
Debt, not demand, is the worry
The warning hit a sector already under pressure. CoreWeave and Nebius have each lost more than 30% of their market value this month, and bonds of Nebius maturing in 2034 and CoreWeave expiring in 2033 have hit record lows, Reuters reported. Earlier in October, research firm Gartner said CoreWeave was at the top of about 100 neoclouds most exposed to rising leverage, and that 80% of the companies could cease independent operations by 2032. Alberto Gallo, founder of hedge fund Andromeda Capital, was quoted as saying there is too much debt, spent on the assumption of infinite demand for AI compute.
Earnings will test the AI story
The broader market was steadier, with US stock futures edging higher as oil fell, but the test this week is earnings. Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon report in the coming days, and investors want evidence of monetisation, margins and cash flow, not just demand for computing power.
