Nigeria Power Supply to Improve Within 72 Hours

Electricity pylons in Nigeria

Nigeria's Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has assured Nigerians that electricity supply will begin to improve within 48 to 72 hours as the Federal Government works to tackle the generation and transmission constraints behind recent outages in parts of the country.

Tegbe gave the assurance in a statement titled "Update on Power Situation", published on his Facebook page on Friday. He said his ministry was working with relevant power sector operators to restore affected generating units in phases, improve gas supply and speed up repairs to damaged infrastructure.

The minister blamed the worsening power situation on planned maintenance at Egbin Power Station in Lagos, Nigeria's largest thermal power plant, which supplies about 16 per cent of the electricity on the national grid. Planned maintenance there, combined with constraints in gas supply to some thermal power stations, has reduced the amount of electricity available on the grid, forcing operators to introduce load shedding in some areas.

"My team and I are working to return the affected generating units to service in phases, with the first units coming back online within the next 48 to 72 hours," Tegbe said. The assurance covers the first affected units returning to service, rather than a promise of uninterrupted electricity nationwide within three days.

The outages have affected households and businesses in several states, including Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory. The minister acknowledged the hardship caused by the outages and said the government was working to restore supply as quickly as possible.
