The Nigerian Army has announced the full restoration of its official X account, @HQNigerianArmy, after an attempted cyberattack disrupted its control of the platform in August. The Army confirmed the recovery on Sunday, 8 November 2026.

In a statement signed by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, the Army said administrative control of the account had been fully reinstated, the platform was now secured, and regular updates on its activities, operations and achievements would resume.

The Army said in a brief message on the restored account: "This account is fully restored and back under the official management of the Nigerian Army. We appreciate your patience and understanding." It urged the public to reconnect with and follow @HQNigerianArmy for timely and verified information.

The incident began on 29 August 2026, when the Army detected attempts to gain unauthorised access to the account at about 5pm. Colonel Anele confirmed at the time that the incident was being treated as a cybersecurity breach, and said immediate technical and protective measures had been activated to secure the account.

While recovery was under way, the Army directed Nigerians to its alternative channels, including its Facebook and Instagram accounts and its other verified X handle, @nigerianarmyinfo. The August incident came shortly after a similar cyberattack on the Defence Headquarters' X account, @DHQNigeria, earlier in the same month; that account was recovered within days.

The Army has not publicly disclosed further technical details about how the attackers gained access or the specific measures used to recover the account.
