North Korea Fires Missiles as Kim Yo-jong Warns US

North Korea fired several missiles towards the East Sea on Wednesday morning, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said, in what Seoul described as Pyongyang's fourth weapons launch in a month. The missiles were launched from the Sondok area on North Korea's east coast and are believed to have flown less than 300 kilometres, according to South Korean military statements reported by Yonhap and Al Jazeera.

South Korean and United States authorities are analysing the specifications of the missiles, and the type has not yet been confirmed. Reports said officials have left open the possibility that the launch involved close-range ballistic missiles, surface-to-air missiles or cruise missiles. One Seoul-based analyst told Yonhap the missiles appeared to be Hwasong-11 Ra surface-to-surface tactical ballistic missiles, but that assessment is unconfirmed.

Kim Yo-jong's warning to Washington

The launch came hours after Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, dismissed the prospect of talks with Washington unless the United States abandons what she called its hostile policy. In a statement carried by state-run KCNA on Wednesday, she said North Korea had no need to sit face to face with people who refuse to abandon a policy of confrontation.

Kim Yo-jong said the abandonment of that hostile policy was a major premise for solving problems, and warned of stronger countermeasures. Analysts quoted in South Korean media said the message appeared aimed primarily at Washington and could foreshadow further weapons tests, though it stopped short of ruling out negotiations altogether.

Fourth launch in a month

The launch follows a cruise missile test reported on Monday, 2 November, and a larger ballistic missile launch the previous week, according to the reports. North Korea also revealed on Wednesday that Kim Jong-un had visited the Nampho shipyard on 2 November to inspect a large warship under construction, underlining a parallel naval build-up alongside the missile programme.
