More than 23.4 million children have been vaccinated against polio during the first five days of Pakistan's ongoing sub-national immunisation campaign, the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) said on Saturday.

The campaign is being conducted in 97 selected districts across the country, targeting approximately 24 million children under the age of five. More than 200,000 frontline polio workers are taking part in the drive. The sixth day of the campaign was under way on Saturday, with vaccination activities scheduled to continue uninterrupted until 8 November.

The NEOC said the campaign is being conducted simultaneously in Pakistan and Afghanistan as part of coordinated regional efforts to prevent the spread of the poliovirus and protect children against the crippling disease. Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two countries where polio remains endemic, and cross-border coordination has become a central part of eradication efforts.

The latest figure shows the campaign gathering pace. A day earlier, the centre reported that more than 22.1 million children had been vaccinated during the first four days, meaning more than a million further children were reached on the fifth day alone.

Health officials have urged parents to make sure every child under five receives the drops during the campaign, which is the latest in a series of sub-national drives held through the year. The final tally, once the campaign closes on 8 November, will show how close the drive came to its target of around 24 million children.
