Pakistan rules out new fuel-saving curbs for now

The federal government has told the National Assembly that it has ruled out additional fuel-conservation measures for now, saying current stocks are sufficient for the coming weeks. The information was given by Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik in a written response to the Assembly on Thursday 29 October 2026. Existing austerity measures will remain in effect; only further restrictions were ruled out at this stage.

The stock figures

Petrol stocks were put at 506,000 tonnes, including cargoes at berth and anchorage, sufficient for an estimated 22 days. Diesel stocks were put at 568,000 tonnes, sufficient for an estimated 30 days. The estimates were based on average daily sales of approximately 22,500 tonnes of petrol and 19,000 tonnes of diesel.

No diesel imports were planned for that period because of existing stock levels and anticipated refinery production. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority is coordinating with refineries, oil marketing companies and the Petroleum Division to monitor supply.

An important date caveat

Readers should note that the stock figures reflect the government's reported 22 September supply position, not a fresh 30 October stock count. The 29 October statement is new; the underlying stock snapshot it cites is about five weeks old. That distinction matters when judging how much cover actually remains today.

The statement is distinct from the recent fuel price revision, which changed pump prices rather than the supply position. For now, the government's message is reassurance: no new curbs, stocks described as adequate, and the existing austerity measures staying in place.
