English actor Sir Patrick Stewart has died aged 86, his family has announced. He died at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, 28 October, with the death announced on Thursday, 29 October.

A family statement said his death followed a “brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy Body Dementia”, neither of which had previously been publicly disclosed. He is survived by his wife, Sunny Ozell, and his children, Daniel and Sophie.

Picard, Professor X and the stage

Stewart was best known to global audiences as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films, roles that made him a defining figure of screen science fiction. His career was rooted in classical theatre, including long work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and he was knighted in 2010 for services to drama.

He had been due to return as Professor X in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release in December, a final screen appearance that now takes on a different meaning for fans.

Tributes from friends and colleagues

Tributes came from across stage and screen. Sir Ian McKellen, a friend of 50 years from their Royal Shakespeare Company days, led the remembrances, joined by William Shatner, Hugh Jackman, Jonathan Frakes and Marvel Studios, among others. The messages remembered not only the commanding screen presence, but a warm, funny and generous colleague whose voice and bearing shaped two of popular culture's most enduring characters.
