Platinum Jumps 8% in a Week to $1,538 an Ounce

Platinum was the standout performer among precious metals this week, rising almost 8 per cent as gold and silver also rebounded strongly after a bruising October. New York closing prices show platinum ended the week at $1,538.15 an ounce, up $113.52, or 7.97 per cent, from $1,424.63 a week earlier. Palladium also gained, rising 4.91 per cent to $1,022.79 an ounce.
The moves came in a week when the whole precious metals complex recovered after the US midterm elections weakened the dollar and pushed Treasury yields lower. Gold rose 4.55 per cent on the week to $4,060.20 an ounce, while silver gained 5.75 per cent to $51.89.
Platinum's weekly gain was the largest of the four metals, helped by a 3.6 per cent jump on Wednesday alone, when it rose to $1,467.60. Friday brought a cooler finish. Gold settled lower at $4,074.90 after a stronger-than-expected US jobs report lifted the dollar and rate-hike bets, and palladium fell 2.6 per cent on the day. Platinum was the only major metal to rise on Friday, adding 0.95 per cent to $1,536.90.
Despite the strong week, the metals remain well below their peaks earlier in the year. Platinum is roughly flat against a year ago, while palladium is still down more than 26 per cent over twelve months. The week's rebound shows buyers returning after October's sell-off, but Friday's pullback is a reminder that the path higher depends on the dollar, US interest rates and next week's inflation data.
