Polio drive vaccinates 23.4m children in five days

More than 23.4 million children have been vaccinated against polio during the first five days of Pakistan's latest sub-national immunisation campaign, the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) said on Saturday.

The drive is running in 97 selected districts across the country and is targeting about 24 million children under the age of five. More than 200,000 frontline workers are taking part, going door to door to administer the drops.

The sixth day of the campaign was under way on Saturday, with vaccination due to continue without a break until Sunday, 8 November. The NEOC reported 22.1 million children vaccinated in the first four days, so about 1.3 million more children were reached on the fifth day.

The campaign is being conducted at the same time in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the only two countries where wild poliovirus remains endemic, as part of coordinated efforts to stop the virus spreading across the border.

The update comes days after Pakistan confirmed its ninth polio case of 2026, in a seven-month-old boy from Khyber district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Seven of this year's nine cases have been reported from the province and two from Sindh, according to the NEOC.

Health officials have urged parents to make sure every child under five receives the drops during the campaign and to complete routine immunisation on time. Pakistan has reported a sharp fall in cases in recent years and officials have said the country aims to eliminate polio by June 2027, a goal that depends on reaching every child in each round.
