Poundland owner warned over rescue bid rejection

Ministers have warned Poundland's owner that it could face government intervention, after reports that a rescue offer for the discount chain was turned down. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the owners had serious questions to answer if a workable rescue proposal had been rejected, as concern grows over the future of around 600 stores and 12,000 staff.

Poundland is not in administration. Its directors filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators last week, a step that gives the business temporary protection from creditors while efforts to secure its future continue. Stores remain open.

Why the rescue talks stalled

Reports say a management-backed takeover proposal from Irish investment firm Martin Property Group foundered over a £30 million shareholder loan. Owner Gordon Brothers is reported to have sought repayment of the loan in full upfront, despite having acquired it for a nominal sum as part of its takeover of the chain. The government is understood to be examining whether the owner has met its legal obligations, while supporting efforts to find a buyer. Ministers are not expected to provide financial support directly.

What happens next for stores and staff

A break-up of the store estate is seen as a possible outcome, with Poundstretcher reported to be interested in almost half of the shops and other retailers said to be considering individual sites. Any such outcome could still mean significant job losses. Poundland founder Steve Smith has warned that a collapse could put as many as 30,000 jobs at risk across the wider supply chain, a broader warning that goes beyond the 12,000 people directly employed by the chain. The picture is complicated by reports of improving recent trading, with sales said to have risen in September and early October.
