Four people were injured when the roof of a four-storey commercial building collapsed in the central region of São Paulo, Brazil, on Friday, authorities said. A fire department spokesperson said 35 people had been inside the building and all of them were rescued. The four people who were injured were taken to hospital and are all in stable condition. The building is in Brás, a traditional commercial hub in São Paulo home to numerous low-cost retail malls. The collapse happened on Friday evening, and the cause is under investigation.

Rescue in Brás

Firefighters said about eight people managed to get out of the building before rescue teams arrived, while another 27 were rescued by crews working inside the store. Around 20 people were initially trapped in a room that did not collapse. The building functioned as a clothing store and fabric warehouse on Rua Maria Joaquina, and the collapse involved a mezzanine level inside the premises. A worker who was on the third floor told Brazilian media the structure "came falling from front to back" as he made his way out through the rubble. The four injured people, who suffered abrasions, were taken to the Mooca emergency care unit and are doing well.

Cause under investigation

Rescue teams continued working at the site to remove goods and debris and to check for anyone still trapped, using search dogs and manual searches once the structure was judged safe enough to enter. Fire service commanders said the possibility of victims under the rubble could not be ruled out until the searches were complete, and no deaths or missing persons had been recorded.
