Saudi coalition downs drone over Eastern Region

The Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen said early on Saturday that it intercepted and destroyed a drone over Saudi Arabia's oil-rich Eastern Region, as attacks by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi group continue. The coalition later said it also intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by the Houthis toward the Southern Region, extending a pattern of cross-border incidents that has intensified amid the US-Israeli war on Iran.

The Eastern Region is the economic powerhouse of Saudi Arabia, home to much of its oil industry, and it has been subject to multiple attacks by the Houthis in the past few weeks. Cross-border fighting involving the coalition, which backs Yemen's internationally recognised government, and the Houthis, who control the capital Sanaa, has opened another front in the wider regional conflict, with Saudi military sites, airports and energy infrastructure among the reported targets.

The Mecca denial

The coalition had also said on Friday that it intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by the Houthis over Saudi Arabia's Medina region, but the group denied any Friday attack. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group had carried out no operation towards Saudi territory that day, dismissing the coalition's account as false. The Houthis have repeatedly denied targeting Mecca and Medina, Islam's two holiest cities, saying their cross-border attacks are limited to Saudi oil facilities and military bases.

That denial is itself part of the story: both sides agree that drones and missiles are flying, but they disagree, sharply, about where they are aimed. The coalition's Saturday statement does not report casualties or damage from the Eastern Region interception, and no independent verification of the interception was available in the reporting. What is clear is the geography: the war's drone front now reaches from Yemen's border regions to the kingdom's eastern oil heartland.
