Police Scotland received 144 fireworks-related calls on Halloween night, down from 160 on 31 October last year, as officers dealt with fireworks thrown at people, buildings and vehicles in parts of Scotland.

There were reports of fireworks being lit in the street and thrown at members of the public in Glasgow, Tranent in East Lothian and Bonnyrigg in Midlothian. In Bonnyrigg, police were called to the High Street at around 7.50pm on Saturday after fireworks were thrown, but the group had fled by the time officers arrived, and inquiries to identify those involved are ongoing under incident number 3094 of 31 October.

Operation Moonbeam runs to 5 November

Seven dispersal orders were issued in Edinburgh, and work was ongoing to establish how many were issued in Glasgow under Operation Moonbeam, the annual operation that runs until the evening of 5 November and allows police to call on specially trained officers to deal with violence and disorder. Firework control zones, where it is an offence to set off fireworks, are in place in 14 areas of Edinburgh and four in Glasgow until early November.

Chief Superintendent David Robertson, gold commander for Operation Moonbeam, said the overwhelming majority of Scotland's communities had celebrated Halloween in the proper spirit, and thanked the public for their support. No officers were injured during the operation on Saturday, and there were no charges for breaches of firework control zones. Moonbeam resources will continue to support local policing teams across the country throughout the next week, police said.
