Serbia and Brazil are both voting on Sunday 25 October 2026, and the results will be watched far beyond either country. Serbia is holding a snap parliamentary election, while Brazil is holding a presidential runoff. Polls in Serbia were due to close at 20:00 local time, and Brazil's polls were due to close at 17:00 in Brasilia time, with official result releases following as returns are processed.

Serbia: a student-backed challenge

In Serbia, the contest pits the party of President Aleksandar Vucic against a Students' List backed by the student protest movement that grew after the collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad in November 2024, which killed 16 people. About 6.4 million Serbs were eligible to vote for the 250-seat National Assembly, choosing among 18 electoral lists. The European Union has been closely monitoring the vote because of previous concerns about irregularities, and commentators have described the election as one of Serbia's most unpredictable in years.

Brazil: a runoff with regional stakes

In Brazil, incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva faces Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, in a runoff described in reporting as tight. A Bolsonaro win would move Latin America's largest economy closer to the politics of US President Donald Trump, while a Lula win would keep Brazil on its current course. Bulgaria is also voting for a president on the same day, adding to a crowded election weekend across Europe and Latin America.

No official winner should be declared from early partial returns alone. Serbia's figures depend on releases from its electoral commission, and Brazil's depend on the Superior Electoral Court's processing of polling-section returns. DailyByte will report the confirmed outcomes once the official bodies publish them, rather than calling either race from exit polls or unofficial tallies.
