Singapore's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, will undertake an official visit to Islamabad on Friday, 30 October, at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Pakistan's Foreign Office has announced. The visit was reported on 29 October, a day before the minister is due to arrive.

A visit announced a day ahead

During the visit, Dar and Balakrishnan are to hold talks covering the full range of Pakistan-Singapore relations, and to exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual interest. Balakrishnan is also expected to call on Pakistan's leadership, although the Foreign Office announcement did not publish a detailed schedule of those meetings.

Disaster-management deal on the agenda

A memorandum of understanding on cooperation in disaster management between Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority and Singapore's Civil Defence Force is to be exchanged during the visit. The agreement points to practical cooperation between the two countries' emergency-response institutions, rather than a purely ceremonial exchange.

Sixty years of diplomatic ties

The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Singapore, and comes ahead of Singapore taking up the chairmanship of ASEAN in 2027. Pakistan and Singapore describe their relationship as cordial and anchored in mutual respect and longstanding friendship, and both sides say they want to deepen and diversify the partnership. In May, Dar had contacted Balakrishnan to seek Singapore's help with the welfare and repatriation of Pakistani and Iranian seafarers aboard vessels seized by US authorities, a reminder that consular cooperation already forms part of the relationship.
