South Sudan's ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) has ordered its cadres to leave the capital and return to their constituencies as the party prepares for its Third National Convention and the general elections scheduled for December 2026. Secretary General Akol Paul Kordit announced the mobilisation at a press conference in Juba on Thursday, saying senior committees are being sent to states and administrative areas to oversee preparations for the convention and internal primaries.

"As we are all aware that we are going for general election in December this year. The SPLM therefore call upon all its cadres to begin to report to their constituencies, to their respective states and administrative areas and all the way to the grassroots," Kordit said.

Committees head to five areas

Kordit said high-level committees will travel to Upper Nile, Unity and Jonglei states, as well as the Greater Pibor and Ruweng administrative areas. "These teams are heading there to supervise the process of preparation for the SPLM Third National Convention. In this process also, primaries shall be conducted in all the states," he said. The secretariat has said senior cadres will be sent across the country to launch primaries and state congresses.

A vote the SPLM says returns power to voters

Kordit linked the mobilisation to the decision of 22 September to dissolve the transitional government, which he said returned political power to the people. "This is our mission in the SPLM, to see to it that people of South Sudan elect their leaders, to have leaders that are accountable to them," he said. The December vote has been postponed before, and the SPLM, chaired by President Salva Kiir Mayardit, is presenting the convention as the route to candidates chosen through its internal structures.
