Sovereignty won the $7 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on Saturday 31 October, giving trainer Bill Mott a third victory in the race and Godolphin a first, in what was reported as the colt's final career start.

Ridden by Venezuelan jockey Junior Alvarado, the four-year-old settled fifth behind pace-setting stablemate Knightsbridge, made his move turning for home and surged clear to complete the 1¼ miles in 2 minutes 0.36 seconds. The Puma finished second and Knightsbridge held third. Defending champion Forever Young, seeking a second successive Classic victory, finished fifth, while Golden Tempo, this year's Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner, also finished outside the first three.

A second chance taken

Sovereignty had been scratched from last year's Classic at Del Mar after developing a fever, despite entering as the 6-5 morning-line favourite. He had already won the 2025 Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes before the scratch and was later named Horse of the Year. Saturday's win, at 5-2 on the morning line and paying $5.94 to win, likely seals a second straight Horse of the Year title.

Mott previously won the Classic with Cigar in 1995 and Drosselmeyer in 2011. Godolphin had gone winless with its previous 19 Classic starters before Saturday, making the breakthrough a landmark for the owner-breeder operation.

The wider Saturday card

The Classic capped a day of nine Grade 1 championships at the two-day Breeders' Cup, which featured 14 Grade 1 races and more than $34 million in purses. Ways and Means had opened Saturday by winning the Filly & Mare Sprint, a result covered in DailyByte's previous batch, while Benvenuto Cellini won the $5 million Turf, lifting trainer Aidan O'Brien's career Breeders' Cup tally to a record 24. Sovereignty improved to eight wins, three seconds and one third from 13 career starts.
