More than 82,000 properties are without power as Storm Boelo continues to batter northern parts of the UK with gusts reaching 84mph. An amber wind warning remains in place until 9pm on Sunday, having activated hours after the first named storm of the season petered out from the south west.

Where the worst winds hit

On Sunday morning, wind gusts peaked at 84mph in Argyll and Bute, 83mph in Snowdonia and 82mph in the Inner Hebrides, the Met Office said. Engineers battling severe weather have reconnected 344,900 customers to power but 82,600 are still disconnected, the Energy Networks Association said at about the same time. Footage showed floodwater coursing around the town of Largs, North Ayrshire, where a Thai restaurant said its kitchen had been overrun by water and it had closed for the foreseeable future due to flood restoration.

Travel and rail disruption

Some flights were diverted from landing at Leeds Bradford Airport and others were cancelled, with the airport thanking customers for their patience and saying its teams were working in very difficult conditions. Train journeys were also disrupted: Network Rail Scotland shared images of flooding at Dalmarnock station, a flooded culvert at Craigendoran, fallen trees at Partick and damage to overhead wires at Bishopton. A yellow warning for wind will return on Tuesday, from 3am until midnight, for the north of England, Scotland and the northeast coast of Northern Ireland. Storm Boelo follows Storm Austen, which brought strong winds to parts of the UK on Friday.
