Man killed by falling tree as Storm Boelo batters Scotland

A 60-year-old man has died after being struck by a falling tree as Storm Boelo battered Scotland on Sunday, Police Scotland said. The death, near Castle Douglas, is reported to be the first life claimed by the storm since it hit late on Saturday.
Police said they were called to a minor road at Mid Kelton near Castle Douglas at around 10.30am on Sunday, 25 October. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a 60-year-old man having been struck by a falling tree on a minor road at Mid Kelton near Castle Douglas around 10.30am on Sunday, 25 October, 2026. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. There are no suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course."
Power cuts and flooding across the UK
The storm brought gusts of up to 84mph in Argyll and Bute, 83mph in Snowdonia and 82mph in the Inner Hebrides, according to the Met Office. An amber warning for wind was in place across Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland and the far north of England until 9pm on Sunday, with people warned not to travel if possible.
More than 82,000 properties were without power on Sunday morning, the Energy Networks Association said, after engineers had reconnected 344,900 customers.
A separate Largs discovery
Largs was left submerged, with Irvine and Saltcoats also flooded, but the body found on Largs beach on Sunday morning is a separate matter: police have said that death, in the search for ferry passenger Jim Wither, is not believed to be linked to the weather, and formal identification is pending.
