A 19-year-old man has been charged over a fatal collision in Leeds in which a 36-year-old pedestrian died. He appeared at Leeds Magistrates' Court on the morning of Saturday 31 October and was remanded in custody to appear at Leeds Crown Court on 27 November.

The collision on Beckett Street

West Yorkshire Police said the incident happened at 9.52am on Thursday 29 October on Beckett Street, when a black Vauxhall Corsa was in collision with the pedestrian, who later died in hospital. Earlier police statements said the car had failed to stop for officers on Harehills Road at 9.50am, that a pursuit was authorised, and that the car was later found abandoned, with at least two people understood to have been in the vehicle. Officers gave medical attention at the scene before the woman was taken to hospital.

The charges

Harry Gyamsie-Perah, of Coldcotes Garth, Leeds, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, using a motor vehicle on a road without third-party insurance, failing to stop after a road accident, and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence. He has not been convicted of these charges; the case will now proceed to Leeds Crown Court, where the charges will be tested. The victim has not been named in the police release used for this report.

Investigation and appeal

Because the vehicle had prior contact with police, the circumstances of the pursuit are being independently investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct. Detectives from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has dashcam footage, to come forward. They are also urging any occupants of the vehicle to contact police. Information can be passed to the team via live chat online or by calling 101, quoting crime reference 13260615046.
