Top sponsored workers to get six months to find new job

The government has said it will work towards giving the highest-skilled sponsored workers up to six months to find a new job if their sponsored employment comes to an end. The commitment was set out in the Budget 2026 document published on 28 October 2026. At present, a sponsored worker whose employment ends is typically given a much shorter period, commonly 60 days, before their permission is curtailed, so the proposal would be a substantial change for those who qualify.

A longer window after a job ends

The Budget document says the length of the longer period will vary depending on how long the worker spent in their previous, highly paid job. It does not define “highest skilled” or “highly paid” in the Budget text itself, and it does not extend the promise to every Skilled Worker visa holder. Implementation is planned for 2027, and detailed changes to the Immigration Rules will still be needed before anyone can rely on the new period.

What employers and workers should wait for

The stated aim is to give employers time to recruit skilled workers who are leaving another sponsor, rather than requiring those workers to leave the country quickly. That could help firms fill specialist roles, but workers should not treat the Budget announcement as a rule already in force. Until the government publishes the eligibility criteria, the exact lengths available, and the start date, anyone facing the end of sponsorship should continue to plan around the current rules and seek regulated immigration advice about their own case. Check the official GOV.UK page before acting, as immigration rules change.
