Toyota Raises Profit Forecast, 1.3tn Yen Buyback

Toyota raised its full-year profit forecast and unveiled a buyback worth up to ¥1.3 trillion on Thursday, sending its shares to their biggest one-day gain since 1987.
Toyota lifted its operating profit forecast for the year to March 2027 by ¥500 billion to ¥3.9 trillion, replacing an earlier forecast of ¥3.4 trillion. It also raised its net income forecast to ¥3.57 trillion from ¥3.25 trillion, still 7.2 per cent below last year's result, according to SourceFirst News.
The buyback includes a tender offer for shares held by insurers and other investors. The upgrade reflects a weaker yen, North American price rises and a smaller-than-feared hit from US import tariffs.
Investors reacted sharply. Toyota's Tokyo shares rose more than 16 per cent on Thursday to close at ¥3,533, their biggest single-day gain since 1987, Bloomberg News reported. In New York, its American depositary shares closed up 9.35 per cent at $218.11. The shares gave back some of the gain on Friday, trading about 3.2 per cent lower in early Tokyo trade.
The upgrade followed a strong first half: operating profit rose 9.2 per cent to ¥2.19 trillion on revenue of ¥26.96 trillion, up 9.5 per cent. In the July-to-September quarter alone, operating profit jumped 34 per cent to ¥1.13 trillion, the first increase in six quarters.
Net income told a different story, falling 18.5 per cent in the quarter to ¥759.4 billion as foreign-exchange losses and higher finance costs weighed on the bottom line. North America, however, swung to an operating profit of ¥166.1 billion from a loss of ¥67.8 billion a year earlier.
Toyota also trimmed sales guidance to 10.99 million vehicles, cut its battery-electric forecast to 460,000 cars, and put this year's US tariff cost at about ¥1.1 trillion.
