Trump Names Stephen Miller as Chief of Staff

** President Donald Trump has named Stephen Miller as his new White House chief of staff. Miller, 41, takes over on Monday, 9 November, replacing Susie Wiles, who moves to the president's political operation.

A shake-up after the midterms

Trump announced the move on Friday, 6 November, in a post on Truth Social, calling Miller "one of my most trusted advisors". The change comes days after Republicans lost control of both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections on 3 November. Wiles, who ran Trump's 2024 campaign, had served as chief of staff since the start of his second term in January 2025. According to CNN, she submitted her resignation on Thursday evening, and Trump told reporters the next day that Miller had been with him "from the beginning".

The architect of the immigration agenda

Miller has been deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser since January 2025, and is widely seen as the architect of the administration's hardline immigration policies. His elevation signals that Trump does not intend to soften his approach despite the election defeat, with Democrats now set to control the House and Senate. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said the choice showed Trump had "learned nothing from his historic defeat". Miller posted on X that it was "the privilege of my lifetime" to serve, adding: "The mission now is more clear than ever."

What happens next

Miller's first test will be managing a White House that must now deal with a Democratic-controlled Congress. Trump has also hinted at further cabinet changes, telling reporters: "I'll be doing maybe a few changes." For now, the appointment puts one of the president's longest-serving and most loyal aides at the centre of power.
