Trump Teases More Cabinet Changes in '60 Minutes' Interview After Wiles Exit

President Donald Trump chairs a cabinet meeting at the White House

President Donald Trump has signalled that the departure of White House chief of staff Susie Wiles may be only the first change to his team after Republicans lost control of both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections.

In a "60 Minutes" interview recorded on Friday morning, Trump said he expected to make further personnel changes. Asked by correspondent Ross Douthat whether he planned to fire anyone from his team after the defeats, he replied: "I do, yeah. Little bit."

"I love my Cabinet. I think they're good, but I'll be doing maybe a few changes. I don't want to mention who," he added. Clips of the interview were released on Friday night; the full interview airs on Sunday at 7pm ET.

Wiles replaced within hours

Within hours, Trump announced that longtime adviser Stephen Miller would replace Wiles, effective Monday 9 November. Wiles, he said, would move to the Trump Political Operation.

Trump did not name Wiles during the interview, and he did not say which other officials might be affected.

Hegseth keeps public backing

Trump was also asked whether he still had confidence in War Secretary Pete Hegseth, whose handling of the war in Iran has drawn criticism and who may face an impeachment vote when the House reconvenes next week.

"I do," Trump said. He pointed to the Venezuela operation, saying: "We've won two wars. We've won Venezuela, and taken out billions and billions and billions of dollars already." Asked whether he credited Hegseth with that operation, he replied: "No, but he was a part of it."

CBS News reported earlier in the week that Trump had privately asked advisers whether Hegseth should stay, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis floated as a possible replacement. Hegseth has ruled out leaving voluntarily.
