UK Graduate route shortens from 1 January 2027

The UK Graduate route will be shorter for bachelor's and master's graduates who apply on or after 1 January 2027, under the Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules HC 584, published on 3 September 2026. Summaries of the package put the new Graduate permission at 18 months, and note that it cannot be extended.

Where the change sits in HC 584

HC 584 is a staged package: most changes took effect on 8 October 2026, with further changes on 29 October for Minister of Religion and Religious Worker routes, on 30 November for higher Student maintenance figures, and on 9 December for an EU Settlement Scheme identity-document change. The Graduate route change is dated separately, to 1 January 2027, and sits alongside those stages rather than with the October bulk. It does not, on the summaries available, change the position for applications made before that date.

Check the official page before acting

This is general information only, not personal immigration advice: individual cases turn on the exact route, course, application date and transitional provisions in the official statement, which can change. Anyone planning around the Graduate route should check the official GOV.UK HC 584 publication and the current Graduate route guidance, and consider a regulated immigration adviser for their own circumstances, rather than relying on a summary. The Home Office consultation on earned settlement, which ran to 12 February 2026, is a separate proposal and is not the same as this Graduate route change.
