UK weather: fog lifts, dry and settled week ahead

The UK faced widespread fog on Sunday 1 November 2026, with the Met Office issuing a yellow fog warning covering London, large parts of England and several areas of Wales. The warning ran from midnight until 10:00am, with reports of visibility falling below 100 metres in the densest patches and possible delays to road, rail and air travel.

Conditions improved as the morning fog lifted. London later saw largely overcast skies with temperatures near 12°C, and the Met Office forecast a more settled start to the week. The warning followed an unusually wet period across England, driven by successive named storms Austen and Boelo.

What the week ahead looks like

High pressure is expected to dominate for much of the coming week, bringing mostly dry conditions with sunny spells, although a few showers are possible at times, particularly in the far south-east and in northern, eastern and south-eastern areas. Temperatures are expected to stay near average for early November, with chilly starts.

Forecasters said the dry theme was not good news for southern regions still in severe drought, including parts of the South West, Sussex and much of Wales after a very hot summer. North-west England had earlier moved to drought recovery status after England's wettest week for two years.

How long the settled spell lasts

High pressure is expected to stay in control until at least Friday 6 November, with weak fronts possibly bringing cloud and light rain to the far north-west. For 7 to 8 November, forecasters pointed to more changeable weather, though confidence was low.

Fog is expected to reform overnight in places, particularly in England and Wales. Check the Met Office warnings page before travelling, as forecasts can change.
